Back-to-school tips for children

emirates7 - As students in the UAE prepare for a new school year, Dubai’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) has released a video offering parents expert guidance on ensuring a smooth, stress-free, and even enjoyable return to school.

Dr. Fatima Youssef, Consultant in Pediatric Mental Health at Dubai Health, emphasized the vital role of parental support during this transitional period. “Returning to school can be exciting, but it may also bring anxiety and uncertainty for many children,” she noted.

The video provides practical advice for parents to help their children adjust:

Listen to children: Understanding their feelings and concerns is essential. Asking about what excites or worries them helps children feel acknowledged and supported.

Encourage open communication: Creating a safe environment for children to share experiences and emotions builds trust and strengthens parent-child relationships.

Support routines gradually: Adjusting bedtimes, morning schedules, and study habits a few days before school starts helps children adapt without stress.

Foster confidence: Celebrating small achievements, emphasizing effort over perfection, and setting realistic academic and personal goals encourages self-belief.

Promote emotional well-being: Teaching coping strategies such as deep breathing, mindfulness, or discussing feelings with a trusted adult equips children to manage anxiety effectively.

Dr. Youssef also highlighted the importance of balancing academics with play. “School isn’t just about studies—it’s about friendships, creativity, and personal growth,” she said. “Parents should encourage children to engage in hobbies, sports, and social activities alongside their academic work to support well-rounded development.”

Parental involvement
KHDA’s video underscores that active parental involvement is key to children’s happiness and academic success. By providing support, understanding, and encouragement, parents can help children overcome challenges and make the new school year a positive and fulfilling experience.

With schools reopening, KHDA and Dubai Health urge parents to prioritize their children’s mental well-being and help make the school year a time of growth, enjoyment, and lasting memories.
