Will Shreyas Iyer take over as India’s new ODI captain?

emirates7 - Not all is bleak for Shreyas Iyer. Although he was left out of the upcoming Asia Cup in the UAE, reports from India indicate that the 30-year-old is being considered a frontrunner for India’s ODI captaincy.

Sources cited by NDTV suggest that the selectors see Iyer as a potential long-term successor to Rohit Sharma, and he could be named captain for the ODI series against Australia in October.

The final decision, however, will depend largely on Rohit’s plans regarding his future in the format. The 38-year-old, along with Virat Kohli, has already stepped away from Test and T20I cricket.

With a congested international schedule, the BCCI is keen to avoid overburdening any single player with leadership responsibilities. Shubman Gill, who currently captains the Test side and is a strong T20I captaincy contender, is unlikely to lead across all three formats.

Gill is set to captain the Test team in the two-match home series against the West Indies from October 2 to 14. Soon after, from October 18, India will tour Australia for an ODI series, followed by five T20Is. While Gill is expected to play in the T20Is, his participation in the ODI squad is not guaranteed.

After the Australia tour, which concludes on November 8, India will host South Africa for a two-Test series starting November 14, along with limited-overs fixtures. Given such a packed schedule, it is unrealistic to expect Gill to feature in every match, either as captain or player.
