Ports in Oman see growth in handling containers

emirates7 - Oman’s ports recorded notable growth in ship traffic, container throughput, and cargo handling during the first half of 2025, supported by ongoing infrastructure development initiatives led by the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, according to the Oman Observer.

Muhanna bin Musa bin Baqer, Director General of Ports at the Ministry, highlighted that container handling saw a marked rise, with Salalah, Sohar, and Duqm ports processing 2,427,195 TEUs in the first six months of 2025, compared to 2,173,508 TEUs during the same period in 2024—an 11.7% increase. He noted that this growth underscores the efficiency of logistics operations and the ports’ capacity to meet rising demand.

Ship traffic also climbed, with Omani ports and marine docks collectively receiving 6,586 vessels in the first half of 2025, up from 5,930 ships a year earlier—an increase of 11.1%. Key contributors to this expansion included Sultan Qaboos Port, Shinas, and Salalah.

The total volume of goods handled across the ports reached 70,114,527 tonnes, compared to 66,620,847 tonnes in the first half of 2024, reflecting a 5.2% rise. Additionally, the ports received 50,248 vehicles and facilitated the import of 2,694,293 heads of livestock, highlighting their role in supporting diverse economic activities.

As part of its strategic vision to enhance port infrastructure, the Ministry has awarded a consultancy services contract for the design and supervision of the Khor Jarama development project, aimed at boosting the site’s readiness and maritime use. It has also granted consultancy tenders for the rehabilitation of Shannah and Masirah ports.
