Shanghai airports, cruise ports experience summer travel boom

emirates7 - Since the start of the summer travel season, Shanghai’s ports have experienced a consistent increase in cross-border passenger traffic. In July alone, Shanghai’s airport and ports recorded over 3.67 million cross-border passenger trips, marking an 11.8% year-on-year rise.

According to a report from SMG, Terminal 2 at Pudong International Airport was bustling with crowds, primarily composed of families on vacation and overseas students. Popular travel destinations included Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America.

By 2 PM, the airport’s arrival hall was also crowded, with numerous international flights landing. Many foreign visitors arrived with their families, either for tourism or for longer stays in China.

Shanghai Customs data shows that in July, Shanghai’s airport and ports handled more than 3.67 million cross-border passenger trips, up 11.8% compared to last year. From January to July 2025, the total number of cross-border passengers grew by 20.1% year-on-year. Pudong Airport ranked highest among all Chinese airports in cross-border passenger volume.

To cope with the summer surge in travel, Pudong Airport Customs has introduced new technologies and equipment, greatly enhancing customs clearance efficiency and passenger experience. Regular travelers can now complete customs procedures in about five minutes after luggage collection.

Furthermore, between January and July this year, Shanghai’s cruise ports managed 381 inbound and outbound cruise ship calls and a total of 1.191 million cross-border passenger trips, representing increases of 62.8% and 56% year-on-year, respectively.
