emirates7 - With a daring 16.5km solo attack, UAE Team Emirates-XRG’s Isaac del Toro powered to his eighth win of the season at Sunday’s Circuito de Getxo. The young Mexican launched a decisive move on the steep final ascent of the Alto de Pike and held off the chasing group all the way to the finish line in Getxo, securing another triumph for his team — their 69th of the year.
Behind him, teammate Juan Ayuso played a key supporting role, staying tucked into the chasing group before outsprinting his rivals to claim second place, giving the Emirati squad a dominant 1-2 finish.
Del Toro’s win capped off a strong weekend in the Basque Country for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, following Jan Christen’s second place at Saturday’s Clásica San Sebastián. In that race, Del Toro had also been in the mix, finishing fifth after a tough day of racing.
Throughout Sunday’s race, UAE Team Emirates-XRG controlled the peloton, with riders like Marcos Freire, Domen Novak, and Jay Vine helping to reel in a 10-man breakaway. Their efforts ensured that the peloton arrived intact for the key climb of the day.
At the base of the Alto de Pike (2km at 9.6%), Ayuso set a punishing pace that stretched the field and softened up the competition. With the groundwork laid, Del Toro launched his attack, quickly gaining a 10-second lead by the summit.
On the descent, Ayuso marked attacks from Alex Aranburu (Cofidis), with Héctor Álvarez (Lidl-Trek) and Toms Skujiņš joining the chase. Despite their efforts, Del Toro maintained a 20-second buffer into the final kilometers, holding firm on the final rise to the finish.
