Iraq's PM launches construction works of phase one of Second Beiji Gas-Fired Power Plant

emirates7 - On Saturday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani inaugurated the construction of the first phase of the Second Beiji Gas Power Plant in Salah al-Din Province. The project aims to generate a total capacity of 1,014 megawatts.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Media Office, reported by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Al-Sudani praised the efforts behind launching this strategic project, emphasizing that the energy sector is fundamental to any comprehensive development strategy. He noted that the government has provided the necessary funding to enhance the electricity sector—including generation, transmission, and distribution—in order to boost power supply across the country.

The project is being carried out by a partnership between Siemens Energy of Germany and China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC). It involves rehabilitating six Siemens gas turbines, each capable of producing 169 megawatts, totaling 1,014 megawatts.

Additionally, the project includes the creation of a high-voltage dispatch network featuring seven circuits at 400 kilovolts, which will connect six transmission lines to the national grid. A new 132-kilovolt network with 16 lines will also be built to serve Salah al-Din Province. The first two generation units are expected to come online within 27 months, with the remaining units to follow, one every two months.
