Abu Dhabi completes 95% of first phase of Environmental Centennial 2071 plan

emirates7 - The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), together with its strategic partners, announced that 95% of the first phase of the Abu Dhabi Environmental Centennial 2071 plan was successfully completed by the end of 2024.

This impressive progress was achieved within just the second year since the plan’s launch in 2023, advancing Abu Dhabi’s environmental sustainability agenda with the ambitious vision of positioning the emirate as a global leader in environmental and climate action by 2071.

To date, the Abu Dhabi government has accomplished 359 milestones and positive outcomes under the plan, with 63 initiatives surpassing their initial targets.

These successes were made possible through active collaboration among key government bodies including the Department of Municipalities and Transport, the Department of Culture and Tourism, the Department of Energy, the Department of Government Enablement, the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, the Abu Dhabi Investment Office, the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre, Abu Dhabi Mobility, and Abu Dhabi Maritime.

Furthermore, the government has engaged in international partnerships with over 24 countries worldwide to support the plan’s objectives.

Sheikha Al Mazrouei, Executive Director of the Integrated Environmental Policy and Planning Sector at EAD, remarked, “This outstanding achievement, exceeding expectations, is a result of the collaborative efforts of leading government entities prioritizing sustainability—fully aligned with Abu Dhabi’s vision. These results demonstrate our strong belief in collective action and a positive spirit that continues to drive us and our partners towards achieving the Abu Dhabi Environmental Centennial 2071 goals.”

The first pathway, titled “a vibrant emirate, thriving in nature,” reached an 88% completion rate, marked by several key accomplishments such as launching a comprehensive aquaculture development plan, unveiling the UAE’s first hydrogeological map to assess groundwater resources nationally, creating a sustainable agricultural development plan, and establishing an integrated air quality modeling framework.

This pathway also saw the rollout of hydrogen and electric bus charging infrastructure, the launch of electric bus operations (which received a global sustainability innovation award), the creation of a Marine Sector Sustainability Action Plan, and the introduction of the Abu Dhabi Energy and Water Efficiency Strategy 2030.

Under the third pathway, “enablers for future environmental leadership,” participating entities achieved a 97% completion rate. Notable milestones include launching the Emirate’s “Dark Sky” general policy to reduce nighttime light pollution, and introducing a community engagement program to co-develop solutions for air and noise quality challenges.

In environmental education and awareness, Abu Dhabi hosted the 12th World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC), bolstering international cooperation, and launched the seventh edition of the Sustainable Schools Initiative.

Additionally, the Marine Sustainability Research Centre was established, and “Sukun” — the world’s largest 3D-printed water taxi — was introduced. An intelligent soil quality monitoring system integrating AI, remote sensing, and spectroscopy for pollutant detection was also developed.

Together with its strategic partners, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi continues to strengthen the emirate’s position as a leader in environmental and climate action.
