emirates7 - The Abu Dhabi ILCA 4 sailing team has traveled to the Sultanate of Oman to begin a focused 10-day training camp in Ras Al Hadd, a coastal area renowned for its excellent sailing conditions.
This training camp is part of the team’s broader preparation for the upcoming Oman ILCA Championship and aligns with a technical development programme aimed at grooming Emirati sailors for future international competitions.
Ras Al Hadd was selected for its consistent winds and favourable maritime climate, making it an ideal setting for advanced sailing practice. The ILCA 4 class, in particular, benefits significantly from such natural environments, as it emphasizes close interaction with real-world weather and sea conditions.
The team is composed of eight of the UAE’s top youth sailors in the ILCA 4 category: Abdullah Yahya Al Zubaidi, Abdullah Mohammed Al Niyadi, Omar Qais Qandil, Abdullah Fahad Al Muhairi, Saleh Hassan Al Hammadi, Abdulrahman Abdullah Al Hajri, Abdullah Yousuf Al Hammadi, and Saif Tareq Al Marzouqi. They are under the guidance of coach Patrick Lutomski and accompanied by media representative Khalid Al Saadi.
This camp is designed to enhance the sailors’ technical and physical performance, improve their racing skills in real-world conditions, and simulate scenarios they will face in international regattas. The team will also compete in the Oman ILCA Championship, a significant fixture in this year’s competition schedule.
ILCA 4, a youth-focused and Olympic-recognised sailing class, serves as a crucial stepping stone to higher levels such as ILCA 6 and ILCA 7. With its demanding nature and emphasis on strategy and technique, it provides a strong foundation for sailors aspiring to reach European and global competition standards.
Backed by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council and overseen by the UAE Sailing and Rowing Federation, the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Academy remains committed to fostering homegrown sailing talent through professional training experiences in authentic and challenging environments. This approach supports the UAE’s long-term goal of achieving international success in modern sailing.
Khalifa Al Suwaidi, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Academy, highlighted that the Ras Al Hadd camp aligns with the academy’s strategic mission to nurture a new generation of competitive sailors.
“Our aim is to offer the most effective training conditions for our young athletes. This external camp plays a key role in sharpening their skills under real-world circumstances. ILCA 4 is the launchpad to Olympic-level sailing, and we are dedicated to helping our national sailors prepare for the journey ahead,” Al Suwaidi said.
