Emirates Publishers Association secures Observer Status at WIPO’s 66th General Assembly

emirates7 - The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has granted observer status to the Emirates Publishers Association during its 66th General Assembly held in Geneva in July. The assembly included representatives from member states and intellectual property organizations worldwide.

This status allows the Emirates Publishers Association to take part in WIPO’s member state assemblies and the various unions it supervises.

Furthermore, the association can now engage in relevant committees, working groups, and subsidiary bodies, enabling it to actively participate in global discussions and policy development concerning publishing and intellectual property rights.

Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Founder and Honorary President of the Emirates Publishers Association, described this milestone as a significant moment for both the association and Arab publishing. She emphasized that becoming an observer ensures that the voices of publishers and creators from the region are included in global intellectual property conversations, strengthening the protection of creative rights while promoting access, innovation, and cultural diversity.

Rashid Al Kous, Executive Director of the association, stated that this observer status will help enhance copyright protection and new opportunities for local publishers to collaborate and exchange knowledge.

He added, “We are dedicated to elevating the UAE’s role in matters related to publishing and intellectual property rights, contributing to the development of these frameworks both regionally and internationally, with an emphasis on nurturing creativity and content creation.”

This recognition marks an important milestone in the association’s ongoing mission to support the publishing sector locally and regionally. It aligns with their efforts to improve the publishing framework in the UAE, governing laws, and expand legal protections for creative works.

With over 360 publishing houses in the UAE as members, the association is committed to advancing the publishing profession, encouraging a culture of reading, and supporting initiatives that foster literacy and wider access to knowledge.

By joining WIPO, the Emirates Publishers Association takes a key step toward broadening its global influence and contributing to building a sustainable future for the creative industry in the UAE and across the Arab world.
