The National Energy Administration (NEA) reported that electricity usage rose 5.4% year-on-year last month, reaching 867 billion kilowatt-hours.

Broken down by sector, electricity consumption in the primary industry increased 4.9% to 13.3 billion kilowatt-hours, while the secondary industry saw a 3.2% rise to 548.8 billion kilowatt-hours. The tertiary sector experienced a more notable increase, with consumption climbing 9% to 175.8 billion kilowatt-hours.

Residential power use also grew significantly, reaching 129.1 billion kilowatt-hours in June—a 10.8% increase compared to the same period last year.

For the first half of 2025, total electricity consumption in China reached over 4.84 trillion kilowatt-hours, marking a 3.7% year-on-year rise.

Amid widespread high temperatures in recent days, the country recorded a new electricity consumption record on July 16, when the national peak load hit 1.506 billion kilowatts—the first time in history it has surpassed the 1.5 billion kilowatt mark, according to the NEA.
