emirates7 - Riding for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, Tadej Pogačar claimed second place in the 33km individual time trial, gaining over a minute on many of his general classification (GC) competitors.
On stage 5, Pogačar finished just behind Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step), who won the time trial. Despite losing only half a second per kilometre to the time trial world champion, Pogačar crossed the line just 16 seconds after Evenepoel, clocking a time of 36:58. This strong performance earned him second place on the stage and secured his first Yellow Jersey of the year, leading the race by 42 seconds over Evenepoel.
In addition to the Yellow Jersey, Pogačar also took the lead in the King of the Mountains and Points classifications as the race heads into stage 6. The Slovenian expressed his happiness with the day’s performance before focusing on the upcoming stages.
Pogačar’s teammate, João Almeida, also delivered a solid ride, finishing eighth on the day and moving up to seventh in the overall standings. The 26-year-old Portuguese rider has had a remarkable season and, being less than two minutes behind Pogačar, remains an important contender for UAE Team Emirates-XRG as the race progresses.
