emirates7 - The Medical Korea 2025 symposium was held today in Abu Dhabi, co-organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and the Korea Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI), under the theme "New Horizons in Radiation Therapy: Particle Beam Therapy." The event took place at Le Royal Meridien Abu Dhabi and gathered leading global experts and specialists in radiation oncology.
The symposium aimed to enhance scientific and clinical collaboration between the UAE and South Korea, with a particular focus on cutting-edge cancer treatments such as proton therapy and carbon ion therapy. It also sought to promote academic exchange and the development of precision medicine as both countries work to improve cancer care.
The initiative reflects a joint response to the global increase in cancer cases and the urgent need for innovative medical technologies. It highlights the shared commitment of the UAE and Korea to advancing medical science and delivering high-quality care to cancer patients.
In his keynote address, Park Jong Kyoung, Minister and Consul General of the Korean Embassy in the UAE, cited World Health Organization (WHO) statistics, noting that over 20 million people are diagnosed with cancer each year and approximately 10 million die from the disease. He warned that this number is expected to rise to over 35 million annual cases within the next 25 years.
Describing cancer as one of the gravest health threats facing humanity, Park emphasised that it remains a major cause of death in both countries. He called for stronger scientific and medical cooperation between Korea and the UAE to confront this challenge.
Park highlighted Korea's leadership in applying advanced radiation therapies, such as proton and carbon ion treatments, which are central to the symposium. He also praised the UAE’s recent move to introduce a carbon ion accelerator facility, showcasing its commitment to cancer care innovation.
He further underlined the robust strategic partnership between the two nations, which began with the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in 2009. “Korea and the UAE have cultivated a broad-based partnership, spanning nuclear energy, defence, and investment. I hope this strong foundation will now extend into the healthcare sector,” he concluded.
