emirates7 - João Almeida of UAE Team Emirates delivered a remarkable solo triumph on Stage 4 of the Tour de Suisse on Wednesday, concluding a determined 49-kilometre attack that finished in Piuro, Italy. The Portuguese cyclist made a strong comeback after losing time earlier in the race.
Almeida launched his winning move 1.8 km before the top of the Splügenpass, capitalizing on support from his teammates. He pulled away from rivals Oscar Onley (Picnic-PostNL) and Felix Gall (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), ultimately finishing 40 seconds ahead of the pair.
This victory propelled Almeida from 18th to 7th in the overall standings, now trailing race leader Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ) by 2 minutes and 7 seconds.
“It took a big effort – a tough ride backed by great teamwork, and it felt good to finish it off,” Almeida said. “There’s still a lot of racing left and time to recover, but I’m pleased with the stage win. We’ll give it another go tomorrow. It’s going to be another challenging day, but I’m feeling strong, which bodes well with the Tour de France just around the corner.”
The stage win marks UAE Team Emirates’ 46th victory of the season.
