emirates7 - As part of the UAE’s preparations for the 62nd session of the Subsidiary Bodies (SB62) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), scheduled to be held in Bonn, Germany from June 16 to 26, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized a national coordination meeting involving key national stakeholders.
The meeting was led by Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, who highlighted the vital role of the UAE delegation in reinforcing the nation’s global climate leadership and building on the legacy established at COP28. He also underlined the need to maintain cohesive national positions across all negotiation tracks to enhance the UAE’s influential participation in the talks.
SB62 represents a significant preparatory step towards achieving ambitious outcomes at COP30. The agenda covers a broad range of technical issues related to the Paris Agreement, including climate finance, adaptation, loss and damage, the Global Goal on Adaptation, and carbon market mechanisms under Article 6.
The interactive session gathered over 30 negotiators and representatives from government bodies and the private sector. They received technical briefings on priority topics such as the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance, the UAE Just Transition Work Programme, and updates on implementing the historic UAE Consensus announced at COP28.
Discussions also focused on harmonizing national messaging across different negotiation streams and strengthening the UAE’s presence in both formal and informal consultations. The UAE’s leadership role in advancing multilateral climate agreements was emphasized, guided by principles of ambition, inclusivity, and climate justice.
Abdulla Balalaa reaffirmed that the UAE’s engagement at SB62 builds on its strong diplomatic and climate credentials and reflects its firm dedication to advancing the UAE Consensus. He stressed the importance of supporting Parties to sustain momentum towards global climate goals and facilitating a just and effective transition to a sustainable, net-zero future.
Notably, this effort is part of the UAE’s role in the COP Troika alongside Azerbaijan and Brazil, an initiative launched during the UAE’s COP28 Presidency. It underscores the UAE’s continued commitment to assisting developing nations, empowering vulnerable communities, and leading global climate governance through enhanced financing, capacity building, equitable resource access, and the integration of environmental and development priorities.
