TRENDS holds symposium exploring cooperation between China, MENA region

emirates7 - TRENDS Research & Advisory, in partnership with the China Centre for Europe and Africa of the China International Communications Group (CICG) and Foreign Languages Press, organized a symposium titled “Cooperation between China and the Middle East and North Africa Region under the Global Security Initiative.”

The event attracted a distinguished audience, including diplomats, intellectuals, and researchers from China and across the MENA region.

Dr. Mohamed Abdullah Al-Ali, CEO of TRENDS, delivered the opening address, highlighting the key tenets of China’s Global Security Initiative (GSI), which was launched in April 2022. He emphasized its commitment to global peace through principles such as collective security, adherence to the UN Charter, respect for national sovereignty, and the peaceful resolution of disputes.

Al-Ali pointed out that these values resonate with the MENA region’s strategic vision for a multipolar global order rooted in sustainable security and non-intervention. He stressed that the region could benefit from the GSI’s approach to tackling crises, countering terrorism, and addressing climate change and cyber threats.

He also noted the region's deepening economic relations with China, particularly through widespread participation in the Belt and Road Initiative, which supports broader cooperation under the GSI framework.

China’s Ambassador to the UAE, Zhang Yiming, addressed the evolving global challenges and the increasing importance of implementing the GSI in the Middle East. He recalled President Xi Jinping’s proposal of the initiative at the 2022 Boao Forum for Asia, calling for unity and a win-win approach in the face of global uncertainties. Zhang highlighted the current era as the most fruitful in China–Middle East relations, marked by growing cooperation across various sectors.

Following this, Liu Dawei, Vice President of CICG, conveyed a speech—delivered by Li Wenxue, Deputy Director of CICG’s Centre for Europe and Africa—exploring the shared theoretical and practical foundations of Sino-Arab collaboration on security and development. The address also traced the long-standing ties between China and the Arab world, from the ancient Silk Road to the contemporary Belt and Road Initiative.

It was noted that the UAE plays a pivotal role in this partnership, serving as China's top trading partner in the Arab world and one of the most stable and secure nations globally.

The symposium featured a series of presentations by prominent experts, offering detailed analyses on various dimensions of China-MENA cooperation under the GSI framework.
