Swiss speed camera captures duck flying at 52 km/hr

emirates7 - A radar image taken in central Switzerland last month revealed a surprising speeder: a duck, which local authorities believe may even be a repeat offender.

Police in Koniz, a town near the Swiss capital Bern, were stunned when reviewing radar images from April 13. Among the speeders was a mallard duck, clocked at 52 kilometres per hour (32 mph) in a zone with a 30-kilometre limit, according to a Facebook post from the municipality over the weekend.

The unusual incident, first reported by the Berner Zeitung newspaper on Monday, took an even stranger turn.

Authorities discovered that a nearly identical-looking duck had been photographed flying through the same location at exactly the same speed — on the same date — seven years ago.

The town said it briefly questioned whether the image was an elaborate April Fool's prank or a manipulated photo. However, the police inspectorate confirmed that the radar system and its images could not be tampered with.

The radar equipment is tested and calibrated annually by the Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS), and the photos are securely sealed, the municipality noted.
