Identity key to society, preserving heritage national duty: Sharjah Ruler

emirates7 - His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, emphasized that identity serves as the foundation of a strong and united society. He highlighted the vital need to preserve both physical heritage—such as historical artifacts and architectural structures—and intangible heritage, including traditional songs, chants, and dances.

Explaining the meaning of the Arabic term "Zubarah," His Highness stated that it signifies "building" and refers to the act of stacking stones, such as in the phrase "Zabar Al Bi’r," which means placing a stone inside a well. He encouraged citizens to actively contribute to their nation, uphold their religious and social obligations, and foster national unity. He also advised the public to refrain from unnecessary online arguments and instead use social media responsibly.

During a phone interview on the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority’s programme Direct Line with media figure Mohammed Hassan Khalaf, His Highness responded to a public query about the word "Al Zubarah," clarifying that it denotes construction through stone stacking, symbolizing the strength and effort in building.

He reiterated the importance of safeguarding heritage, whether it be material—like ancient relics—or non-material aspects such as music and dance. According to him, the only way to truly preserve these traditions is through consistent practice that children can observe and learn from. This experiential learning, he noted, helps embed heritage in younger generations, reinforcing that identity is the anchor of any society. Without it, a community lacks grounding.

His Highness further expressed hope that every individual would take on the responsibility of protecting their community, starting from their homes, extending to their neighborhoods, and ultimately their nation. This includes caring for the environment, avoiding harmful behavior, and resisting negative influences.

He concluded with sincere, fatherly counsel to the younger generation, urging them to view society as a sacred trust. He encouraged them to give back to their country through kind words and respectful behavior, to avoid online disputes, and to rise above imitation. He reminded them of their roots and called on them to protect the homeland of their forefathers. With God’s will, he said, future generations will grow to be conscious of their religious, national, and societal responsibilities.
