'Mediterranean Blue Diamond' worth $20 million at auction

emirates7 - A 10-carat blue diamond, potentially worth $20 million, was unveiled by Sotheby’s in Geneva on Thursday ahead of its upcoming auction later this month.

Named the "Mediterranean Blue Diamond," the cushion-cut gem was sourced from South Africa and features an exceptionally rare hue classified as fancy vivid blue, according to Sotheby’s.

Jessica Wyndham of Sotheby’s remarked that demand for coloured diamonds continues to grow, and she anticipates the stone could achieve a price near $20 million.

For comparison, a similar vivid blue diamond fetched 56.8 million Swiss francs (approximately $68.7 million) at a Christie’s auction in Geneva back in 2016.

The diamond is part of Sotheby’s high jewellery collection, which also showcases other coloured gems, and was previewed by the media in Geneva ahead of the live sale scheduled for May 13 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.
