DEWA’s Distribution Network Smart Centre promotes Dubai’s pioneering digital transformation

emirates7 - Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has strengthened the resilience and efficiency of its smart grid through the Distribution Network Smart Centre (DNSC), which supports advanced automation and decision-making capabilities.

The DNSC plays a pivotal role in DEWA’s digital transformation and its drive towards sustainability. It supports and oversees three of DEWA’s major smart initiatives: the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) for electricity; Shams Dubai, which enables building owners to install solar photovoltaic systems; and the EV Green Charger initiative, aimed at encouraging the use of electric vehicles through a widespread charging station network across the city.

Using data collected from smart devices embedded in the distribution network, the centre monitors, analyses, and responds to real-time information and alerts. By integrating technologies such as Big Data, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning, the DNSC enables smart diagnostics and analytical services, automating maintenance responses to enhance service reliability and customer satisfaction, while minimizing human intervention.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, DEWA’s MD & CEO, highlighted that the DNSC is a vital component of DEWA’s Smart Grid Strategy 2021–2035, focused on network automation through advanced monitoring and data analysis to deliver proactive and effective solutions.

Rashid bin Humaidan, Executive Vice President of Distribution Power, noted that since its launch in January 2024, the DNSC has been processing over 15 million data points daily. The system converts this information into actionable reports and dashboards, aiding data-driven decisions and improving customer experience.

The centre also continuously monitors Dubai’s smart electricity meter network via an automated system. It delivers timely reports to DEWA’s Distribution Power division, helping reduce electricity outage durations by enabling faster, more informed responses. Any detected configuration errors are quickly addressed through automated alerts and field crew dispatches.

Additionally, the DNSC performs daily remote meter readings to ensure data accuracy, which is also accessible to customers through the DEWA smart app. These capabilities provide detailed energy usage insights, helping with long-term planning for electricity demand. Traditional meters across Dubai have been fully upgraded to smart meters.

The centre also keeps constant watch over DEWA’s EV Green Charger network, supplying accurate, real-time data on station performance and technical needs to support efficient operational decision-making.
