emirates7 - President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera of Malawi welcomed H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the UAE, in the presence of Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nancy Tembo, at the start of Sheikh Abdullah’s official visit to Lilongwe, the Malawian capital.
During their meeting, Sheikh Abdullah conveyed greetings from UAE leaders—President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Prime Minister His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and Vice President His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan—to President Chakwera, along with their best wishes for Malawi’s continued progress and prosperity.
In return, President Chakwera sent his regards to the UAE leadership and expressed his hopes for the UAE's ongoing advancement and success.
The two leaders explored ways to strengthen bilateral ties, particularly in economic, commercial, investment, and developmental sectors, as well as in other shared areas of interest.
Sheikh Abdullah emphasized the UAE’s commitment to fostering deeper cooperation with Malawi and building strong development partnerships that align with both nations’ goals for sustainable growth. He reiterated the UAE’s dedication to enhancing economic ties with African nations more broadly.
Sheikh Abdullah also expressed his gratitude for the warm reception he received in Malawi and said he was honored to meet with President Chakwera.
Following the discussions, both leaders witnessed the signing of five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between the UAE and Malawi:
Diplomatic Training: A MoU between the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy and Malawi’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, signed by Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of State, and Minister Nancy Tembo.
Investment Cooperation: An agreement promoting investment collaboration between the two countries, signed by Sheikh Shakhboot and Vitumbiko Mumba, Malawi’s Minister of Trade and Industry.
Minerals Sector Investment: A MoU on investment in the mining sector, signed by Sheikh Shakhboot and Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma, Malawi’s Minister of Mining.
Digital Learning Initiative: A partnership between the UAE’s Digital School (under Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives) and the Malawian government, signed by Sheikh Shakhboot and Minister Nancy Tembo.
5Business Council Formation: An agreement between the Federation of UAE Chambers of Commerce and Industry and Malawi’s Ministry of Trade and Industry to establish a joint UAE-Malawian Business Council, signed by Sheikh Shakhboot and Minister Vitumbiko Mumba.
