emirates7 - The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) of the UAE and Korea's Ministry of Environment convened the 7th Joint Operation Committee for Water Resource Cooperation to exchange knowledge, discuss innovative technologies, and foster collaboration in water resource management.
The meeting, co-chaired by Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at MoEI, and Seunghwan Lee, Director-General for Water Use Policy Bureau of Korea's Ministry of Environment, focused on advancing joint efforts in water management.
Al Olama emphasized the vital role of water in sustaining life, ecosystems, and economies, noting that it remains a top priority for nations due to its link to food and energy security. He highlighted the UAE's significant achievements in water management despite its desert landscape and limited freshwater resources. These efforts are guided by the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036, which aims to ensure sustainable, uninterrupted access to safe and adequate water supplies.
He further underlined the strong cooperation between the UAE and Korea in water resource management, describing it as a model for achieving global climate goals and promoting sustainable water and energy solutions. This partnership is bolstered by research and development in innovative technologies, knowledge exchange, capacity building, and benchmarking of best practices.
Seunghwan Lee reflected on the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two nations in 2015 to enhance collaboration in the water sector. Since then, six committee meetings have been held, driving progress in joint water initiatives. He expressed optimism about the outcomes of this seventh meeting and the applicability of Korea’s advanced water management technologies.
The meeting featured presentations from both sides. The UAE introduced initiatives for smart water network management, as well as strategies for managing surface water, flash floods, and dams. Korean experts showcased technologies for floating photovoltaic systems and urban flood early warning systems, highlighting their potential for adaptation in the UAE's context.
