China leads in rural tourism as seven villages win UNWTO Award

emirates7 - Seven Chinese villages have been honored as "Best Tourism Villages" for 2024 by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), bringing China's total to 15 villages recognized under this esteemed program—the highest number globally.

The announcement was made during the 122nd Executive Council meeting of the UNWTO, held in Cartagena, Colombia.

The newly awarded villages include Azheke in Yunnan, Guanyang in Fujian, Shibadong in Hunan, Taoping in Sichuan, Xiaogang in Anhui, Shitou in Zhejiang, and Yandunjiao in Shandong, as reported by People’s Daily Online.

According to China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, rural areas across the country received approximately 2.248 billion visitors in the first three quarters of 2024, reflecting a 15.5% year-on-year increase. These regions generated 1.32 trillion yuan (about AED 670 billion) in revenue, a 9.8% rise compared to the same period in 2023.

The "Best Tourism Villages" program, launched by the UNWTO in 2021, seeks to highlight the importance of tourism in preserving rural communities, protecting cultural heritage, and supporting biodiversity and local livelihoods.
