emirates7 - Under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, and supervised by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Executive Council, Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a contract for the Oud Metha and Al Asayel Streets Development Project, as part of the larger Sheikh Rashid Corridor Development Project. This initiative is in response to the city's urban expansion and population growth.
The project aims to link Al Asayel Street with Al Khail Road via Al Nawras Street, providing improved access to Oud Metha and Al Nawras Streets. Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, described the project as a critical infrastructure upgrade. It includes the construction of four major intersections, 4,300 meters of bridges, and 14 kilometers of new roads, serving key areas such as Zabeel, Al Jaddaf, Oud Metha, Umm Hurair, Latifa Hospital, and Al Wasl Club.
By 2030, the project is expected to support a population of over 420,000 people and increase the capacity of Oud Metha Street by 50%, from 10,400 to 15,600 vehicles per hour. Additionally, travel times on the route will be cut by 75%, reducing journeys from 20 minutes to just 5 minutes.
The first intersection at Oud Metha Street and Sheikh Rashid Street will feature a new left-turn lane, boosting capacity to 1,800 vehicles per hour. Other enhancements include improving service roads and increasing right-turn lanes on Sheikh Rashid Street, raising capacity to 4,000 vehicles per hour.
At the second intersection of Oud Metha Street with Al Asayel and Al Nawras Streets, two new bridges will be built: a two-lane bridge for 2,400 vehicles per hour and a three-lane bridge for 3,600 vehicles per hour, facilitating traffic flow between Al Asayel and Al Khail Road. A separate bridge will handle left-turn traffic, with additional improvements to roads leading to Al Wasl Club and Al Nawras Street to resolve current traffic issues.
The third intersection at Al Nawras Street and Al Khail Road will include a two-lane bridge with a capacity of 3,000 vehicles per hour. Upgrades will increase exit lanes from Al Nawras Street to Al Khail Road, and service roads with parking will be added on both sides of Al Nawras Street.
The fourth intersection at Zabeel Palace Street with Al Khail and Oud Metha Streets will include a new left-turn lane and tunnel to increase capacity and reduce traffic overlap. The existing bridge from Al Khail Road to Oud Metha Street will also be expanded from two to three lanes.
The Sheikh Rashid Corridor Development Project is one of RTA's largest strategic road initiatives. Previous phases included upgrading Ras Al Khor Road, expanding lanes, and constructing bridges, which have significantly improved traffic flow, increasing capacity to 10,000 vehicles per hour and cutting travel time by 65%. This project serves major developments in areas like Dubai Creek, Meydan Horizon, and Ras Al Khor, benefiting an estimated population of 650,000.
