emirates7 - The fourth Al Sidr Environmental Film Festival, focusing on the theme "All Living Beings," will take place from October 25th to 27th. Organized by the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi in collaboration with The Arts Centre at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), this year's festival will highlight the interconnectedness of all living organisms, emphasizing the essential bonds between humans, wildlife, and ecosystems.
Dr. Nezar Andary, the festival’s artistic director, stated that human well-being is intricately linked to the environment, climate, and other species on Earth. He explained that the theme "All Living Beings" underscores the mutual dependence of all life on the planet and stresses the responsibility of humans, as the most advanced species, to protect other creatures and their habitats.
The festival aims to bring attention to global environmental issues, making them more immediate and relatable for audiences in Abu Dhabi and the UAE. Dr. Andary hopes the selected films will resonate with viewers, fostering a sense of empathy and responsibility. The event will showcase a range of environmental films and serve as a platform for discussing local environmental challenges through documentaries, narrative films, and expert panel discussions.
The festival also seeks to inspire audiences to engage with environmental issues through the power of film and interactive activities. In addition to the main screenings, Al Sidr will travel to schools across Abu Dhabi, aiming to directly engage and inspire students.
Ahmed Baharoon, Executive Director of the Environmental Information, Science, and Awareness Department at the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi, noted that the festival aligns with the UAE's national agenda and the ongoing Year of Sustainability in 2024. It highlights the UAE’s dedication to environmental preservation and sustainable initiatives, reinforcing sustainability as a national priority.
The festival has partnered with the UAE-based social enterprise Climate Tribe, led by H.H. Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, which promotes climate action through storytelling. Additionally, the festival is collaborating with Lebanon’s Reef Film Festival, with both Climate Tribe and Reef contributing films to the event.
Attendees can also look forward to various activities, including "Kayaking for Conservation" in partnership with Emirates Wildlife – EWWF, and a public panel featuring the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi at The Arts Centre at NYUAD. The festival will also host a special exhibition titled “The Conservatory for Plant Kingdom Obesity,” created in collaboration with Camilla Singh and the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi.
