emirates7 - This week, the COP28 Presidency participated in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly and New York Climate Week to rally global leaders around the UAE Consensus, aimed at keeping the 1.5°C climate goal within reach.
Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and COP28 President, urged countries to submit "transformational" Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) ahead of schedule to build momentum in this crucial decade for climate action. Leading the COP28 delegation, Dr. Al Jaber, along with Shamma Al Mazrui, Razan Al Mubarak, Ambassador Majid Al Suwaidi, and Adnan Amin, participated in high-level discussions and bilateral meetings.
Throughout the week, the COP28 Presidency highlighted economic opportunities arising from three key global trends: energy system transformation, rapid AI development, and the rise of the Global South. Dr. Al Jaber also announced that the UAE will submit its third NDC before COP29 in Azerbaijan, calling on all nations to act swiftly, viewing NDCs not as a burden but as opportunities for green growth, job creation, and a sustainable future.
The UAE’s forthcoming NDC will address all greenhouse gases across every economic sector and will leverage advanced technologies, including AI, to drive decarbonization and enhance climate resilience. This economy-wide NDC will be the first of its kind from the UAE, reflecting the country's commitment to building on COP28's Global Stocktake outcomes. The third round of NDCs is formally due by February 2025.
During an event, "Roadmap to Mission 1.5: NDC 3.0," Dr. Al Jaber emphasized the need for significant investment to achieve the UAE Consensus. He encouraged nations to contribute ambitious NDCs that would support socio-economic growth while maintaining the 1.5°C goal.
In addition, Dr. Al Jaber spoke at the Global Renewables Summit, where he underscored the importance of tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030, a key objective of the UAE Consensus. He called for increased investment in infrastructure, AI, and the Global South to accelerate progress.
At the Industrial Transition Accelerator Leadership Council, Dr. Al Jaber discussed unlocking investments and driving decarbonization in six industries responsible for 30% of global CO2 emissions. He also provided updates on ALTÉRRA, the UAE’s $30 billion climate investment initiative, which is already driving clean energy projects in mature and emerging markets globally.
The COP28 Presidency also engaged in numerous bilateral meetings with key global figures, including leaders from Greece, Italy, and the European Commission, as well as the World Bank and BlackRock.
Shamma Al Mazrui took part in various youth-focused engagements, including a flagship event with COP29 Youth Climate Champion Leyla Hasanova. The event discussed the evolving role of the Presidency Youth Climate Champion and announced the creation of a permanent secretariat to support future COP presidencies. Al Mazrui also emphasized the importance of youth inclusion in decision-making processes and meaningful climate action.
Razan Al Mubarak attended events aimed at advancing climate and biodiversity goals, including a ministerial roundtable on integrating nature into climate strategies. She highlighted the need for increased financial support, especially for Indigenous communities.
In addition, the UAE and Ghana signed a climate agreement during the General Assembly, focusing on investment priorities in nature-based solutions and climate adaptation in Ghana.
The COP28 Presidency will continue its efforts to build international momentum ahead of COP29, working with the COP Presidencies Troika to advance the UAE Consensus.
