Initiative Launched to Plant Over 1,000 Ghaf Trees in Al Wathba

emirates7 - TAQA Water Solutions, a leader in sustainable water management, has partnered with Royal Gardens Agricultural Contracting to establish a thriving grove of over 1,000 Ghaf trees in Al Wathba. This initiative marks a significant stride towards environmental conservation and sustainable water practices.

The Ghaf trees will be planted around the main pumping station of a strategic tunnel and will be irrigated entirely with recycled water sourced from TAQA’s advanced wastewater treatment facilities. Each Ghaf tree, with an impressive average lifespan of 120 years, has the potential to absorb approximately 4,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide throughout its life.

By utilizing recycled water for irrigation, TAQA Water Solutions showcases the transformative potential of circular water solutions, significantly reducing the reliance on precious freshwater resources. The company has already achieved a remarkable record by recycling 80% of the water used across the emirate of Abu Dhabi, with plans to reach 100% utilization to further support the UAE's 2050 Net Zero strategy.

Ahmed Al Shamsi, Managing Director and CEO of TAQA Water Solutions, emphasized the importance of this project: “The Al Wathba Ghaf Grove exemplifies how wastewater can support greening efforts in both urban and rural areas, contributing to a sustainable future for Abu Dhabi and the UAE. The Ghaf tree is vital to our ecosystem, and we are proud to help preserve our natural resources through sustainable water solutions.”

Dr. Ahmed Al Sharafi, CEO of Royal Gardens Agricultural Contracting, echoed this sentiment, stating, “We are excited to collaborate with TAQA Water Solutions on this project, which reflects our commitment to environmental sustainability. The Ghaf tree is an essential part of the UAE's natural heritage, and we are thrilled to enhance the beauty of Abu Dhabi’s landscapes while supporting biodiversity for years to come.”

Scheduled for completion in December 2024, this initiative plays a crucial role in the UAE’s efforts to achieve Net Zero by 2050. Known for its resilience and carbon sequestration abilities, the Ghaf tree serves as a natural carbon sink and helps mitigate the impacts of climate change.

As the national tree of the UAE, the Ghaf holds cultural significance and provides habitat for numerous wildlife species. It was also designated as the symbol for the UAE's Year of Tolerance in 2019, highlighting its role in fostering stability in desert environments.
