emirates7 - The Sharjah Museums Authority has announced its first collaboration with the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts for the upcoming exhibition, "Roots and Modernity: Contemporary Mediterranean Arab Art." The exhibition, set to take place at the Sharjah Art Museum from 18th September to 24th November 2024, will provide visitors with a unique opportunity to explore the dynamic world of contemporary Mediterranean Arab art.
Showcasing over 80 pieces, the exhibition will feature a variety of paintings, sculptures, and mixed media works that highlight the fusion of traditional influences and modern techniques characteristic of the region's art. Notable works from the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts' permanent collection will be on display, including those by prominent artists such as Saliba Douaihy (Lebanon), Fateh Moudarres (Syria), Mohammed Melehi (Morocco), and Suleiman Mansour (Palestine). The artworks reflect the cultural, social, and political shifts that have shaped contemporary art in the Mediterranean Arab world.
Aisha Rashid Deemas, Director-General of Sharjah Museums Authority, expressed excitement about this milestone exhibition, emphasizing its role in fostering cultural exchange and promoting the rich artistic heritage of the Mediterranean Arab region. She noted that the collaboration aims to deepen visitors' understanding of contemporary art and its traditional roots.
Dr. Khalid Khreis, Director-General of the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts, added that "Roots and Modernity" brings together the work of leading contemporary Arab artists from across the Mediterranean, representing regions like the Levant, Egypt, and North Africa. He highlighted that the exhibition reflects both diversity and unity, as well as the artists' pursuit of contemporary identity.
Alongside the exhibition, Sharjah Museums Authority has organized a series of engaging museum programs for all ages, aimed at enhancing artistic skills. These include the Clay Art program, which teaches students and individuals with disabilities how to express themselves through clay and stone, and the Etching Art program, offering hands-on instruction in etching techniques. Additionally, the Blending Watercolor and Ink program provides participants with an opportunity to explore creative blending techniques on Yupo paper.
