Labbadia named as new Nigeria coach

emirates7 - Bruno Labbadia, the former German international, has been appointed as the new coach of Nigeria's national football team, marking the third appointment to the role this year.

The Nigeria Football Federation announced Labbadia's appointment on social media, effective immediately, but did not disclose the contract length.

Labbadia assumes his new role just 12 days before Nigeria begins their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. The Super Eagles will face Benin in Uyo and then play against Rwanda away three days later.

At 58, Labbadia is a well-regarded Bundesliga coach with previous tenures at Bayer Leverkusen, Hamburg, VfB Stuttgart, VfL Wolfsburg, and Hertha Berlin. This will be his first coaching role outside Germany.

He succeeds Finidi George, who managed the team for four matches earlier this year.

Labbadia, who has two caps for Germany and played as a striker for clubs including Bayern Munich, will focus on leading the Super Eagles through the qualification process for the Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Morocco in late 2025.
