emirates7 - The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has signed a fuel supply agreement with Framatome to provide nuclear fuel assemblies and engineering services for the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in the UAE.
This partnership marks a significant milestone in ENEC’s strategy to diversify its nuclear fuel sources, aimed at strengthening the nation's energy security and ensuring a continuous supply of clean, carbon-free electricity to homes, businesses, and industries across the country.
As part of the agreement, Framatome will supply complete nuclear fuel assemblies for Barakah. With decades of expertise in fuel manufacturing and innovation, Framatome serves as a strategic partner in reinforcing the resilience and adaptability of ENEC’s fuel supply chain, supporting the plant's sustained excellence in clean energy generation.
Mohamed Al Hammadi, ENEC’s Managing Director and CEO, emphasized that the deal supports their broader vision of securing a reliable and diversified fuel supply. “Diversification is essential to maintaining the safe, clean, and dependable electricity production that powers the UAE’s sustainable economic development,” he said. He also highlighted that Framatome’s technical proficiency and adherence to international standards enhance Barakah’s role as a global example of clean energy leadership.
ENEC remains committed to expanding Barakah’s infrastructure and advancing nuclear innovation through increased fuel security, cost-effectiveness, and advanced solutions.
Framatome CEO Grégoire Ponchon stated, “We are honored to deliver our advanced nuclear fuel to ENEC, supporting energy security and the UAE’s clean energy ambitions.” He noted that the agreement reflects trust in Framatome’s cutting-edge technologies and the proven reliability of its teams.
The fuel assemblies will be manufactured at Framatome’s U.S.-based facility, licensed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and consistently rated top-tier under its Licensee Performance Review for 18 consecutive years.
With over 40 years of experience producing fuel for Combustion Engineering-designed reactors like those at Barakah, Framatome has already supplied more than 6,000 fuel assemblies of this type.
As the region’s first multi-unit nuclear power facility, Barakah stands as a model for successful nuclear development. Featuring four APR-1400 reactors, it is currently the largest source of clean electricity in the region, delivered within just eight years. ENEC continues to pursue strategic global partnerships to support civil nuclear growth and ensure Barakah remains a central pillar of the UAE’s sustainable energy future.
