Forty-four years ago today, December 21, in a landmark moment reflecting the UAE’s early commitment to public welfare, the UAE's founding father, the late President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, inaugurated a 50-bed hospital in the town of Ghayathi, reinforcing his vision of accessible healthcare for all citizens, including those living in remote areas.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Sheikh Mohammed bin Butti, the Abu Dhabi Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region, and Ahmed Khalifa Al Suweidi, the President’s Representative, along with senior officials and community leaders. Their presence underscored the importance attached to the development of healthcare infrastructure in the region.
As reported by Khaleej Times, the hospital was designed to serve the growing needs of the local population, housing outpatient clinics for both men and women, along with several curative and medical departments. At the time, it represented a significant advancement in medical services available in the Western Region.
Speaking on the occasion that day, Sheikh Zayed expressed his appreciation for the nation’s progress in healthcare services and highlighted the importance of extending quality medical care to citizens in distant areas.
The establishment of the hospital, he said, was another step towards fulfilling the aspirations of the people and strengthening the foundations of a modern healthcare system.
Hamad Al Midfa, then Minister of Health, welcomed the President and noted that Sheikh Zayed’s personal inauguration of the hospital reaffirmed his deep concern for the welfare of citizens wherever they resided.
Sheikh Zayed was warmly received by large numbers of residents upon his arrival at the hospital. Accompanied by the Minister of Health, he toured the various sections of the facility, reviewing its services and expressing satisfaction with the standards achieved — an enduring reminder of his hands-on leadership and people-centric vision.
