emirates7 - Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi (KEZAD Group) and Witthal Gulf Industries have signed a 50-year land lease agreement to build a cutting-edge lithium battery recycling facility in Taweelah, KEZAD. The AED 40 million investment marks the first such plant in the UAE and reflects both parties’ commitment to sustainable industrial development.
The facility will use advanced technology to recycle end-of-life batteries from electric vehicles, solar farms, and other renewable energy systems. Valuable materials like black mass, copper, and aluminium will be recovered and repurposed, contributing to a more sustainable supply chain.
Witthal Gulf Industries, a subsidiary of the Singapore-based Witthal Group, operates across the Middle East, Asia, and West Africa. The company plays a key role in the global commodities market by ethically sourcing and trading critical resources, including lithium ore, rubber, tyres, and minerals, to support responsible industrial growth.
Abdullah Al Hameli, CEO of Economic Cities and Free Zones at AD Ports Group, emphasized the alignment between KEZAD and Witthal Gulf Industries in driving sustainability and innovation. He highlighted the importance of such projects in advancing sustainable industry practices and supporting the UAE’s net-zero emissions goals.
Suresh Kumar Nalappa (Vijayendra), CEO of Witthal Gulf Industries, expressed enthusiasm about launching operations in KEZAD. He praised the supportive environment that fosters innovation and collaboration, and affirmed the company’s dedication to responsible growth and meeting market needs sustainably.
This initiative will play a vital role in promoting a circular economy by facilitating the responsible disposal and reuse of lithium batteries. It aims to lower environmental impact by reducing both energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, while reinforcing the UAE’s broader sustainability agenda.
