emirates7 - The United Arab Emirates (UAE), through the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI), has officially taken on the role of chairing the Global Energy Efficiency Alliance (GEEA) for the coming years, following the establishment of the alliance’s General Secretariat.
This leadership role follows the UAE’s announcement to form GEEA during the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku. The initiative supports the UAE Consensus and aligns with the global objective to double the energy efficiency improvement rate—from a historical average of 2% to over 4% annually by 2030.
GEEA reflects the UAE’s dedication to prioritizing energy efficiency within the global climate and energy agenda. The move comes at a critical juncture, as current energy efficiency progress falls short—hovering below 1.5% annually—which risks derailing efforts to meet global decarbonization and net-zero targets.
The alliance complements existing initiatives like Mission Efficiency, the G20 Energy Transitions Working Group, and various regional clean energy efforts. These initiatives are intended to work synergistically—sharing knowledge, funding, and best practices globally—rather than operating in silos.
By chairing GEEA, the UAE is reinforcing its commitment to lead global efforts in enhancing energy efficiency across multiple sectors. It aims to foster closer cooperation among governments, private sector actors, financial institutions, and research entities to accelerate the shift toward more sustainable and efficient energy systems.
Sharif Al Olama, Under-Secretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at MoEI, highlighted that the UAE’s leadership of GEEA signifies global trust in its capability to coordinate and drive meaningful action. He stressed that the alliance will be instrumental in shaping policies, facilitating knowledge exchange, boosting financial access, and promoting innovation to help nations meet both national and international efficiency goals.
Al Olama stated, “GEEA is an inclusive and action-oriented platform designed to help double global energy efficiency rates by 2030 in accordance with the UAE Consensus. We invite global partners to join forces in advancing a more efficient and sustainable future. The alliance will focus on transformative energy efficiency improvements in major sectors such as buildings, transportation, and industry.”
Earlier this year, the UAE hosted a high-level roundtable at the World Government Summit in Dubai, where the foundational structure of GEEA was discussed with participation from countries, global organizations, private companies, and financial institutions.
