emirates7 - His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, presided over the second meeting of the Permanent Executive Committee of the Sharjah Higher Council for Higher Education and Scientific Research, held on Tuesday morning at University City.
At the start of the session, H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan welcomed the committee members and underscored the council’s pivotal role in the coming years. He reiterated the importance of reforming administrative practices, enhancing university governance, and advancing strategic planning within Sharjah’s higher education framework.
The meeting addressed several key topics and future initiatives, including a review of the council’s work report, the organisational structure, strategic direction, subcommittees, criteria for academic staff promotions and evaluations, and matters related to research and innovation.
The committee also evaluated university admission requirements and the range of academic programmes—both general and specialised—ensuring alignment with labour market needs and student interests.
His Highness approved a provisional budget of AED 18 million for the remainder of the year. He also endorsed the council’s new logo and announced the establishment of its official headquarters at University City.
He further tasked the committee with managing scholarship programmes across Sharjah’s higher education institutions, adopting clear governance structures, and fostering coordination between universities and various scholarship providers—whether governmental, semi-governmental, or private.
Revised scholarship criteria for postgraduate studies were also approved, mirroring those for undergraduate degrees. Students registered in Sharjah and whose families earn less than AED 50,000 per month will be eligible for full scholarships. Those exceeding this income threshold will receive 50% tuition grants.
Full scholarships will remain available to specific groups, including children of imams and students with disabilities, with funding provided by the Emiri Diwan. Additionally, universities and academies will offer special discounts for high achievers in academics, sports, research, and other distinguished fields.
Attendees at the meeting included Dr. Mansour bin Nasar, Head of the Sharjah Government Legal Department and committee rapporteur; Dr. Muhadditha Al Hashemi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Private Education Authority; Professor Hamid Majoul Al Nuaimi, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah and Director of the Sharjah Academy for Space Sciences and Astronomy; and Dr. Mohammed Yousuf Baniyas, Higher Education Adviser at the Sharjah Private Education Authority.
