Abu Dhabi Department of Energy unveils strategic framework for energy, water sector through 2050

emirates7 - The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) has unveiled a comprehensive strategic framework for the energy and water sector extending through 2050.

This announcement was made during the 2025 World Utilities Congress held at ADNEC Abu Dhabi Center, with the participation of key decision-makers, senior officials, and experts in energy, water, and sustainable technology fields.

The move comes amid Abu Dhabi’s rapid economic expansion, with the emirate’s GDP exceeding one trillion dirhams, solidifying its status as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. The energy and water sectors have been crucial in supporting this remarkable growth.

Dr. Abdulla Humaid Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, highlighted that the strategic framework provides a detailed roadmap for the future of the energy and water sectors in Abu Dhabi. It is driven by a bold vision to transform these sectors into global benchmarks of efficiency, innovation, and sustainability, aligned with the leadership’s goal of establishing a diversified, net-zero economy by 2050.

He further emphasized ongoing efforts to establish Abu Dhabi as a worldwide innovation hub in energy, leveraging artificial intelligence and advanced digital technologies.

The framework centers on four key goals: ensuring a secure and sustainable supply, achieving optimal efficiency in supply and demand, supporting decarbonization through smart and cost-effective methods, and maximizing the economic value of energy and water resources.

Additionally, the plan includes major initiatives such as digital transformation, increased investment in artificial intelligence, strengthening international partnerships, developing local talent, and regulatory reforms designed to boost private sector involvement and attract global investors.

The strategy aims to draw up to AED 400 billion in foreign direct investment by 2050, increase local content in critical supply chains to 65%, and achieve 100% Emiratisation in key sector jobs.

This framework bolsters economic growth prospects by attracting investment and cutting-edge technologies, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s position as a global center for sustainable energy.

The Department of Energy reiterated its dedication to leading policy, strategy, and regulatory development for this vital sector, while enhancing collaboration with local and international partners and empowering the community to actively participate in building a more prosperous and sustainable future.

In closing, the Department invited innovators and thinkers worldwide to join this sustainability journey, affirming that the framework serves as a platform for innovation and new ideas to tackle challenges and contribute to the prosperity of Abu Dhabi and the UAE.
