UAE’s pragmatic, balanced policy sets regional example: Anwar Gargash

emirates7 - Dr. Anwar Mohammed Gargash, Diplomatic Advisor to the UAE President, addressed the Arab Media Summit 2025 on Wednesday, stating that the world is currently experiencing a period marked by widespread uncertainty across technological, economic, and political arenas.

Speaking during a keynote session titled “Repercussions of Disorder and Challenges of Stability”, Dr. Gargash was joined by notable figures including H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the UAE Olympic Committee, and H.H. Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority.

Dr. Gargash pointed to rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, the global trend toward economic nationalism and protectionism, and a recalibration of U.S. foreign policy with a sharper focus on domestic interests. He also referenced significant developments in the Arab world, including a departure from entrenched ideologies that have historically produced instability—highlighting Lebanon and Syria as examples of nations showing promise through renewed international cooperation.

He praised the UAE’s own model of pragmatic governance, built on principles of stability, security, prosperity, and technological advancement, positioning the country as a positive example for the broader region. Dr. Gargash stressed the UAE’s responsibility to contribute constructively in addressing the global atmosphere of uncertainty.

The session was also attended by Mona Ghanem Al Marri, Vice Chairperson and Managing Director of the Dubai Media Council and President of the Dubai Press Club. It was moderated by Al Arabiya presenter Taher Barakah.

Reflecting on the broader Arab political landscape, Dr. Gargash argued that the past three years—particularly following the events in Gaza—have underscored the collapse of outdated ideologies. He said many in the region still cling to these failed beliefs, which have led to sectarianism, societal division, and a weakened state role. He called for a decisive shift away from ideological rigidity in favor of realism and pragmatism.

He urged Arab states to prioritize practical goals like raising living standards, expanding employment, reforming education, ensuring economic stability, and addressing youth migration. He noted that Gulf nations like the UAE and Saudi Arabia are setting a positive precedent in this regard.

Dr. Gargash emphasized the importance of reinforcing the nation-state model, warning against the dangers of militias and fragmented military control within states. He condemned the reliance on hollow slogans, which have exacerbated stagnation and decline in several Arab countries. He expressed optimism for Lebanon and Syria, now on a path to recovery, and called for continued support to ensure their progress.

He also highlighted the UAE’s inclusive environment, which has enabled Arab expatriates to thrive and contribute meaningfully to the country’s development. Their achievements, he said, reflect the broader capabilities and potential of the Arab population when given opportunity and support.

On foreign policy, Dr. Gargash reiterated that the UAE’s decisions are based on sovereign national interests. He criticized the use of the UAE’s normalization with Israel as a political diversion by some to mask internal failures, asserting that the relationship does not compromise the UAE’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people and their right to statehood.

He pointed out that the UAE has delivered over 42% of all humanitarian aid sent to Gaza since October 7, reinforcing its commitment to the Palestinian cause with action rather than rhetoric.

Dr. Gargash condemned what he described as a deliberate and hostile media campaign targeting the UAE, emphasizing that the country’s achievements are evident to those who view its record objectively. He stressed that credible international observers recognize the UAE’s progress across diverse sectors including the economy, technology, governance, and tourism.

“We won’t be sidetracked by baseless attacks from social media mobs and biased outlets,” he said. “Our success story stands on its own.”

He also addressed the future of the media industry, noting that it too faces uncertainty as artificial intelligence reshapes the landscape. Adaptability, he said, will be key to determining which institutions thrive and which fall behind.

Dr. Gargash concluded by reiterating the UAE’s strategic focus on technology, highlighting major international partnerships, including with the U.S. and France, that underscore the country’s commitment to future-oriented investment.
