World's first humanoid robot boxing match kicks off in China

emirates7 - The China Media Group (CMG) World Robot Competition – Mecha Fighting Series, the world’s first humanoid robot combat tournament, has officially kicked off in Hangzhou, located in eastern China’s Zhejiang Province.

The event brought together various advanced humanoid robots—such as those developed by Unitree Robotics—demonstrating a range of fighting techniques during a livestreamed competition that also showcased the growing capabilities of Chinese robotics companies.

According to CMG, the tournament marks a groundbreaking development as the first-ever sporting event focused on humanoid robot combat, highlighting the increasing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in competitive sports. All participating robots feature technology developed within China.

The competition features both exhibition and real-time combat rounds, where humanoid robots perform martial arts-style moves and engage in boxing matches while being remotely operated by human teams.

Four teams of human controllers directed their robots in a bracket-style boxing competition.

China’s humanoid robot industry is rapidly advancing, with applications expanding beyond factories into everyday household use. The Chinese Institute of Electronics estimates that the country’s humanoid robot market could grow to 870 billion yuan (approximately US$120 billion) by 2030.
