UAE highlights commitment to global energy security at BRICS Energy Ministerial Meeting

emirates7 - Eng. Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, represented the country at the BRICS Energy Ministerial Meeting, held in Brasília under Brazil’s Chairmanship.

In his address to representatives from BRICS member states and partner countries, Al Olama emphasized that the global energy transition is at a pivotal moment. He highlighted the pressing dual challenge of ensuring universal access to secure, affordable energy while significantly cutting emissions to meet climate objectives. For the UAE, he stated, this is not a conflict but a strategic opportunity to lead transformative change through innovation, cooperation, and decisive measures.

He noted that the UAE has achieved full national access to electricity, clean cooking technologies, and cost-effective heating and cooling systems. The country ranks among the top globally for energy access and affordability.

Yet, Al Olama stressed that the UAE’s mission goes beyond its borders. He underlined the country’s investment in renewable energy projects across more than 70 nations, with a focus on Africa, the Caribbean, and small island developing states. The UAE aims to share its successful models in energy financing, public-private collaboration, and technology integration to promote global energy equity.

Al Olama also invited BRICS countries and partners to join the Global Energy Efficiency Alliance, an initiative launched by the UAE to lower carbon intensity through improved efficiency standards, collaborative knowledge-sharing, and joint capacity-building efforts. He asserted that BRICS members could significantly contribute to global energy conservation and the decarbonisation agenda through this alliance.

Additionally, he highlighted the UAE’s regional energy integration through its connection with fellow GCC countries via the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA), which enhances grid reliability and energy security. The UAE is also pursuing broader bilateral and multilateral partnerships to strengthen global and regional energy ties.

One notable example is the UAE’s collaboration with India on establishing a direct electricity link and participating in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), a strategic initiative to enhance economic ties, speed up clean energy deployment, and improve connectivity across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

These initiatives reflect the UAE’s firm commitment to promoting cross-border energy cooperation, reducing emissions, and ensuring global energy security.

During the meeting, Brazil—serving as BRICS Chair—presented the BRICS Energy Research Cooperation Platform (ERCP) Report. This report prioritizes access to reliable, affordable, and modern energy, particularly for underserved populations. Additionally, the Roadmap for BRICS Energy Cooperation 2025–2030 was introduced, outlining a shared vision for progress in clean energy, sustainable fuels, power grid interconnection, and energy innovation.
