UAE Team Emirates-XRG takes lead at Giro d’Italia

emirates7 - In a thrilling Stage 9 of the Giro d’Italia, Isaac Del Toro of UAE Team Emirates-XRG made history by seizing the maglia rosa, becoming the first Mexican rider to lead a Grand Tour.

The 181-kilometre stage from Gubbio to Siena featured a grueling 30 kilometres of gravel roads, echoing the punishing terrain of the Strade Bianche. The chaotic conditions fractured the peloton and dramatically reshaped the general classification standings.

Although Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) claimed the stage win with a fierce sprint finish in Siena’s famous Piazza del Campo, it was Del Toro’s ride that stole the spotlight. The 21-year-old finished second on the day, but his impressive time gain on the GC contenders catapulted him into the overall lead. He now enjoys a 1-minute and 13-second cushion over teammate Juan Ayuso, with Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious) sitting third at 1 minute and 30 seconds back.

Elsewhere in Hungary, Sebastián Molano delivered a standout performance on the final stage of the 2025 Tour de Hongrie. The 30-year-old Colombian sprinter surged to victory with a dominant sprint, besting Danny Van Poppel (Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe). His triumph capped off a strong showing for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, which also saw Alessandro Covi finish runner-up in the general classification, just 7 seconds behind overall winner Harold Lopez (XDS-Astana).
