Dubai Municipality completes development of Dubai Creek’s Deira wharf

emirates7 - Dubai Municipality has announced the successful completion of redevelopment works on the two-kilometre stretch of Dubai Creek’s wharf on the Deira side.

The AED112 million project was designed to upgrade the quay’s infrastructure, enhance operational capabilities, and strengthen the historic waterway’s appeal for both commerce and tourism.

Part of broader efforts to preserve the cultural significance of Dubai Creek—a key maritime route—the initiative also aligns with the goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33. By elevating the quay’s surface level and fortifying the retaining wall, the improvements aim to accommodate growing trade activity and ensure the safe and efficient docking of vessels.

Key upgrades included raising the height of the retaining wall to 8.3 metres, installing 200 mooring anchors, and creating 500 berths for ships. These enhancements are expected to significantly improve maritime safety and increase the wharf’s capacity for handling various commercial and tourism-related marine operations.

Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director-General of Dubai Municipality, described the redevelopment as a strategic infrastructure achievement that aligns with the emirate’s leadership vision and D33 economic strategy. He emphasized that the project not only reinforces the creek’s vital role in trade and tourism but also reflects the Municipality’s commitment to making Dubai a sustainable and forward-thinking global city.

He added that the upgrade was carried out using advanced technology and adaptable plans that allowed marine traffic to continue without disruption. Simultaneously, redevelopment works are progressing on the Bur Dubai side of the creek, covering a 2.3-kilometre area. Once both sides are complete, they will offer improved safety and efficiency for all maritime operations.

Infrastructure and Tourism-Focused Enhancements

To support water flow and long-term durability, 17,500 cubic metres of sediment were dredged from the creek bed, while 24,000 cubic metres of rock were laid for protection. The project also used 22,500 cubic metres of concrete and included the installation of 1,315 precast blocks. A 1,200-metre-long rainwater drainage system was also added to the quay’s rear yard. In total, the project took more than 620,000 man-hours to complete.

The upgraded quay area now spans 320,000 square feet and includes designated cargo zones as well as a newly built public promenade, offering leisure and recreational space along the waterfront. Despite Dubai’s rapid modernization, Dubai Creek continues to be a key cultural and functional element of the city, serving as a vital maritime and tourist landmark.

Dubai Municipality awarded the contract for the development in February 2024.
