Sharjah Fish Resources Authority sponsors 'Khorfakkan Reef'

emirates7 - In alignment with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, to prioritise marine conservation and ensure the sustainable development of marine ecosystems for future generations, the "Khorfakkan Reef" project exemplifies a productive collaboration between the public and private sectors. This initiative supports the broader strategic objectives and ambitious vision of both the UAE and the Emirate of Sharjah.

As part of this effort, the Sharjah Fish Resources Authority, in coordination with a specialised firm, conducted a comprehensive environmental seabed survey at a critical location in Khorfakkan on Friday. This assessment is a key component of the "Khorfakkan Reef" pilot project, which aims to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of artificial reef structures in offering secure and appealing habitats for marine species, while also assessing their broader environmental effects on the local ecosystem.

The project also aspires to pioneer innovative and sustainable methods to enhance fish stocks.

Ali Ahmed Abu Ghazin, Chairman of the Sharjah Fish Resources Authority, emphasized that the "Khorfakkan Reef" project is designed to varied marine environments that attract fish and promote biodiversity.

He added that in 2024, the Authority partnered with the global contractor HaejooX to undertake a year-long study of the project. This study drew from international best practices and evaluated the performance of purpose-built marine reefs within Sharjah's coastal waters.

Using cutting-edge 3D scanning technologies, the study monitored fish populations and species diversity. Initial findings offer a clear baseline, enabling future comparisons to measure the project's success in boosting marine life once completed.
