Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative, China’s ISDMU to collaborate in desalination technology innovation

emirates7 - The Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Institute of Seawater Desalination and Multipurpose Utilisation (ISDMU), which operates under China’s Ministry of Natural Resources, to drive forward technological progress in desalination.

The agreement was formalized at a ceremony attended by Hussain bin Ibrahim Al Hammadi, the UAE Ambassador to China, and Xiang Wenxi, Director and Vice Party Secretary of ISDMU. The MoU outlines plans for potential collaboration on various initiatives, including joint research, training programs, and projects aimed at advancing desalination techniques and technologies.

The goal of this partnership is to strengthen scientific and technological cooperation between the UAE and China, with an emphasis on direct collaboration and skill-building across government, industry, and academic sectors in both countries.

Ayesha Al-Ateeqi, Executive Director of the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative, highlighted the significance of the agreement, saying, “This MoU with ISDMU marks a key step in our mission to foster technological advancement and deepen international cooperation in the desalination field.”

She added, “Desalination continues to be one of the most viable and promising solutions to global water challenges. This collaboration underscores the shared commitment of the UAE and China to develop new innovations that make water access more sustainable and cost-effective.”

Echoing this sentiment, Xiang Wenxi noted, “As China’s sole non-profit, state-level research body dedicated to seawater desalination and related technologies, we are eager to formalize our partnership with the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative. This collaboration will enhance our bilateral scientific and technological exchanges and support peer-to-peer learning and joint project development to further the advancement of desalination.”

The partnership demonstrates a joint vision for the future of desalination—one focused on pioneering innovations to combat water scarcity, uplift communities, and contribute to global sustainable development.
