emirates7 - Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), a key player in the integrated planning, procurement, supply, and dispatch of water and electricity in the UAE, has officially opened registration for its Q2 2025 Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) auction, which will close on 13 June 2025.
These certificates, issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE), verify that the electricity consumed by certificate holders comes from clean or renewable sources. This supports organisations and consumers in validating their energy use and reducing their scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions.
As the designated Single Registrant and Auction Operator, EWEC plays a central role in the CEC scheme’s implementation. The certificates, based on the globally recognised International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard (I-REC Standard), are issued in units of 1 megawatt-hour (MWh). They are the only officially accredited proof of ownership for the environmental and economic benefits linked to clean energy consumption.
Francois Brice, Executive Director of Commercial and Fuel Management at EWEC, stated, “The growing uptake of Clean Energy Certificates demonstrates the commitment of Abu Dhabi’s organisations to sustainability. EWEC is proud to support this transformation by offering an effective and accessible platform to help entities decarbonise in alignment with the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 strategy.
“In this Year of Community, we continue to empower businesses to cut their carbon emissions and contribute to a sustainable and prosperous future. We invite all eligible individuals and entities in Abu Dhabi to join the Q2 2025 auction and play an active role in safeguarding the UAE’s environment.”
Earlier this year, EWEC partnered with Burjeel Holdings to supply clean energy to 22 of its healthcare facilities in Abu Dhabi through CECs, advancing the group’s sustainability efforts.
Aligned with the UAE’s Year of Community initiative—which encourages collective action towards a sustainable future—EWEC is broadening its collaboration with leading organisations in Abu Dhabi to help decarbonise key sectors of the economy.
