emirates7 - Dubai Customs and the University of Dubai have entered into a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kühne and Nagel University (KLU) in Hamburg, Germany. The MoU was formalized in a ceremony held at KLU’s campus, with Dr. Abdulla Busenad, Director-General of Dubai Customs, Professor Washika Haak-Saheem, Dean of the Dubai Business School, University of Dubai, and Professor Andreas Kaplan, President of KLU, signing the agreement.
The collaboration outlined in the MoU aims to foster stronger cooperation in areas such as education, training, and scientific research. It focuses on developing specialized professional programs and providing hands-on training opportunities for students from the Dubai Logistics Academy and those benefiting from Dubai Customs’ scholarship initiative, created in partnership with the University of Dubai.
Additionally, the MoU outlines joint projects in logistics services, supply chain management, and the innovative use of artificial intelligence (AI) in customs operations.
Coinciding with the MoU signing, a group of scholarship students—pursuing master’s degrees in business administration, digital trade, and supply chain management—began an intensive training program at KLU. This program includes academic instruction, practical training, and field trips to key German companies and logistics facilities at the Port of Hamburg, a major logistics hub in Europe. These visits exposed students to advanced AI-driven systems and technologies that improve operational efficiency, automate processes, and enhance service quality, all while promoting sustainability.
This initiative supports the Dubai Government’s strategic aim to incorporate AI into public sector operations and invest in local talent to prepare the workforce for the future.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman of the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation, highlighted that this MoU demonstrates Dubai’s commitment to building a knowledge- and innovation-driven economy under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai. He emphasized the importance of vocational training in preparing national talent for the rapidly evolving technological landscape, noting that it’s a key investment in both individuals and Dubai’s long-term economic success.
Dr. Abdulla Busenad remarked that the MoU is part of a broader strategy to modernize training and development in line with labor market needs. He emphasized that by improving academic programs and practical training, Dubai aims to maintain its position as one of the world’s top logistics hubs.
Dr. Issa Al Bastaki, President of the University of Dubai, stated that the collaboration with KLU is a crucial component of their strategy to offer top-tier academic programs that align with future labor market demands, fostering innovation and excellence among students.
Professor Andreas Kaplan expressed excitement about the partnership, noting that the MoU marks the beginning of a promising collaboration, and he looked forward to the mutual growth and success it would bring in the years ahead.
