ADAFSA celebrates World Veterinary Day

emirates7 - In celebration of World Veterinary Day, observed annually on 26th April, the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) is participating in the 2025 commemoration under the theme: “Animal Health Takes a Team.”

This year’s global theme, announced by the World Veterinary Association, highlights the essential role of collaboration among veterinarians, technicians, livestock breeders, and the broader community in delivering effective veterinary care.

ADAFSA’s involvement in this occasion demonstrates its commitment to recognising and supporting its veterinary teams, who embody this spirit of collective effort.

As part of its ongoing initiatives, ADAFSA is conducting its 16th annual Animal Disease Awareness and Vaccination Campaign (2024-2025), aiming to vaccinate around 2.4 million sheep, goats, and cattle against major diseases, including Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), and Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia (CCPP). Specialised field veterinary teams are carrying out the campaign in close collaboration with livestock breeders.

Alongside vaccination efforts, ADAFSA has intensified its awareness campaigns this month to educate livestock owners about biosecurity and disease prevention. These initiatives stress the importance of isolating new or sick animals, promptly reporting clinical symptoms or unusual mortalities to ADAFSA’s toll-free number 800555, and maintaining proper hygiene by regularly cleaning and disinfecting animal pens and equipment. They also promote sourcing livestock and fodder from licensed, trustworthy suppliers.

Additionally, the campaign offers guidance on preventing zoonotic diseases, underlining personal hygiene practices for farmworkers, proper disposal of waste and animal carcasses, and using approved abattoirs for slaughtering.

These efforts aim to empower livestock breeders to act as the first line of defence, strengthening national efforts to protect animal resources and public health.

ADAFSA affirmed that its sustained biosecurity measures, vaccination drives, and awareness programmes are critical to improving animal disease control.

Rashid Mohammed Al Mansouri, Executive Director of ADAFSA’s Animal Wealth Sector, remarked, “This year’s theme, ‘Animal Health Takes a Team,’ perfectly aligns with our strategy. Our success in vaccination campaigns, awareness activities, and inspection operations relies on strong cooperation among veterinary teams, livestock breeders, and the community. Together, we work as one to safeguard animal health, food safety, and public wellbeing.”

He further noted that ADAFSA continues to invest in developing its veterinary workforce by providing local and international training, participating in scientific conferences, publishing specialised reference materials, and supporting veterinary education initiatives.

The Authority also operates accredited reference centres, including the Collaborating Centre for Camel Diseases and advanced coronavirus diagnostic laboratories.
