emirates7 - Saadiyat Cultural District is preparing to unveil teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, one of four cultural institutions nearing completion in the District. Developed in collaboration with the Tokyo-based art collective teamLab, this new institution will join Louvre Abu Dhabi, Manarat Al Saadiyat, and Berklee Abu Dhabi, forming part of a world-class cultural hub that will eventually include the Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
The collective vision of these institutions will a global cultural platform, fostering a space for people to come together, share ideas, and cultivate mutual understanding. While teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi fits into this cultural narrative, it will offer a distinct experience compared to the surrounding museums, featuring ever-evolving art installations that change with every visit.
Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), explained that Saadiyat Cultural District serves as a place to reflect on the past, understand the present, and envision the future. In this context, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi embodies a forward-thinking fusion of art and technology, providing visitors with a creative journey that sparks curiosity and imagination.
DCT Abu Dhabi has partnered with Miral, Abu Dhabi’s leading developer of immersive experiences, to conceptualize and both teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi and the neighboring Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi. While both museums offer unique perspectives on the natural world, teamLab focuses on the intersection of art, science, and technology.
Covering 17,000 square meters, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi offers a multi-sensory digital experience, where the museum’s architecture, inspired by cloud shapes, is designed to accommodate large-scale installations that interact fluidly with each other. Takashi Kudo, a founding member of teamLab, explained that the museum was designed to integrate the experience into the space, rather than compressing it, ensuring a seamless interaction between the artwork and the visitor.
The museum’s design and artworks are inspired by Tokyo’s pioneering spirit in technology, as well as Abu Dhabi’s striking urban landscape and natural environment, blending innovation, nature, and tradition. teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi will transcend traditional art boundaries, allowing visitors to engage with the artwork in a dynamic and immersive way.
