-"I got returns over 50 times my investment," said the UAE resident of 20 years who works as a call centre employee

ASri Lankan expat who invested Dh15,000 in a gold biscuit has driven away with a gold Mercedes, a prize worth more than 50 times what he spent.

Sumith, who works at a call centre in Al Habtoor, said he is still struggling to believe what happened. “I got returns over 50 times my investment. I am still digesting the news,” said Sumith.

The UAE resident of 20 years had purchased the gold biscuit at Dubai Gold District, purely as an investment. Like many residents, he sees gold as a safe way to save money for the future. He was given raffle coupons under a ‘Spend and Win’ campaign, which offered one voucher for every Dh500 spent.

Since he bought gold worth Dh15,000, he received 30 vouchers. But it took just one of them to change his life.

What makes the story more special is that it was his first visit to Dubai Gold District.

“That day when I went to the market, I even clicked a photo with the car,” he said. “I never thought I would ever win it. But when I saw the car, I just loved it. Somewhere, I had a small feeling I might win something.”

Days later, after his night duty, Sumith returned home in the morning and went to sleep. That is when the life-changing call came.

“I was sleeping when they called me,” he said. “They told me to check my email. When I saw the message, I thanked God.”

At first, he could not believe it was real. Only after confirming the details did the excitement sink in.

Sumith, who comes from Sri Lanka, said owning a luxury car like a Mercedes was never something he imagined for himself. “I never thought I would drive in such a grand vehicle,” he said.

Many people have suggested that he sell the car and use the money instead. But Sumith has made up his mind.

“I will drive the car. I’m not going to sell it for now,” he said. “This is special for me.”

For him, the win is not just about money. It is about a moment he will always remember, his first visit to the Gold Souk, the photo he casually took with the car, the unexpected phone call, and the realisation that one small investment had brought an unimaginable reward.

After living and working in the UAE for two decades, Sumith said that this feels like a blessing.

“I bought gold only as an investment. I never expected this. I am very thankful,” he said.
