You’ve heard of Dubai chocolate — the ultra-indulgent confection packed with pistachio cream, tahini and crispy knafeh pastry that took social media by storm. Now, that viral dessert has inspired South Korea’s latest food obsession: the Dubai chewy cookie.

What is the Dubai chewy cookie?

Despite its name, this is no ordinary cookie. The Dubai chewy cookie has a texture closer to a rice cake, made by encasing pistachio cream and knafeh shreds inside a glossy chocolate marshmallow shell. Dense and sticky, it delivers a bite that has captured the nation’s attention.

The craze first ignited last September after Jang Won-young of K-pop girl group Ive shared a photo of the dessert on Instagram. Since then, demand has exploded. Bakeries are selling hundreds of cookies within minutes, while restaurants that rarely offer desserts — ranging from sushi bars to cold-noodle shops — are rushing to add it to their menus, according to a report in BBC.

Prices currently range between 5,000 won (Dh12.55) and 10,000 won (Dh25.10), but are expected to rise as key ingredients surge in cost. Convenience store chain CU alone has reportedly sold 1.8 million Dubai chewy rice cakes since launching its version in October, the report adds.

Several other reports mention that the obsession is so intense that fans have crowdsourced a real-time map tracking which shops still have stock, turning dessert hunting into a GPS-guided treasure chase. Some stores now limit purchases per customer, while online chatter jokes that even hardware stores should cash in.

The phenomenon has even had social impact, adds a report in Korea Times. To combat winter blood shortages, the Korean Red Cross offered Dubai chewy cookies as donation incentives, leading to donation rates doubling or even tripling at some centres.

Where to buy Dubai chewy cookie in Dubai?

So far, there haven't been any reports or viral social media videos on the Dubai chewy cookie making it to shops here in the city. But, if you're on a quest to find these decadent treats, the Korea pavilion at Global Village might just be the right place to start.
