Gold ornaments valued at nearly Rs3 million (Dh122,00) were stolen by thieves from the hundreds of thousands of mourners who had gathered at Baramati for the funeral of the late deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, Ajit Pawar.

According to the Pune rural police, the thefts took place on January 29, when mourners from across Maharashtra had gathered at the town, where the last rites were being conducted at a sprawling ground.

There were an estimated 8,000 policemen at the site to monitor the situation. Still, a gang of more than half a dozen chain snatchers went about stealing gold chains, other jewellery and even cash from the mourners.

Some of the suspected thieves were nabbed by the crowd and beaten before being handed over to the police. About six of the suspects have been detained.

Pawar was killed along with his security personnel and crew members when the Learjet 45 aircraft that he was travelling in from Mumbai, crash-landed at Baramati airport.

Pawar is the nephew of Maharashtra strongman Sharad Pawar, but the two parted company a few years ago, when Ajit split the party and formed his own outfit, and tied up with the BJP. The two Pawars were, however, reconciling their dispute when the tragedy occurred.
